  16. in New York City. A professional jazzman at 13, Ramirez brought
  17. ebullience and eclecticism to his work with vocalist Ella Fitzgerald,
  18. big-band leader Charlie Barnet and modern master Miles Davis.
  19. Ramirez was also a composer, best known for Lover Man, the sinuous,
  20. melancholy ballad that became a signature tune for jazz diva
  21. Billie Holiday.
